Lovecraftian Operating Theatre

This was created as a competition submission. It is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's body of work. A derelict Victorian era operating theatre being used in the 1920's for...alternative purposes. In the centre is an orrery with a creature as the central star. It was wonderful trying to achieve a more scary, mysterious atmosphere than I'm used to. I avoided obvious cliches like blood stains and used lighting, desaturation, and other elements to emphasize the mood.

I wanted to implement some interesting architecture and shape to the space.

The decorative motif above the doorway was a fun use of Substance Designer.

The bio-luminescent quality of the creature is created by panning several maps and masks. The movement creates a "living" vibe before involving animation.

The design of the orrery is inspired by Art Deco, because it was entering its prime in the 1920s.
